This week we celebrated Earth Day. We are reminded to take a look at our impact on the planet and contemplate what we can do to protect the environment. It’s not just individuals who need to make changes, as businesses, we have a responsibility to do better.
Beyond the simple truth that we need to reduce our impact is that fact that our customers are demanding it. A 2015 report by Nielsen asked what influences how people feel about brands and how those feelings impact buying behavior. We learned that consumers are willing to pay extra for sustainability. According to the report, 66% of global consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable goods. Of the Millennials surveyed, 73% are willing to pay more. Consumers want products that are good for the planet and the people who live here. According to Nielsen, Americans spent 128.5 billion on sustainable products in 2018. Nielsen predicts the sustainability market will reach $150 billion by 2021. As business owners and decision makers, we need to listen to our customers and provide sustainable goods.
What is sustainability? A definition of sustainability, created by the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development, is the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Brew Tea is all about making tea awesome. It’s not just our Green Tea that’s “green.” We are constantly making sure that our tea doesn’t just taste good. It’s always sustainably and ethically sourced, and we know exactly where it comes from. We are dedicated to doing good business by managing our impact — measuring, tracking and setting goals to make sure we’re always having a positive effect on our people, our planet and everything in between. Beyond our own impact, we are also selective with our suppliers and partners, working with those who share our values and champion causes that are important to us. Is that always easy? No, but it’s worth it.
Our B Corp status certifies that we meet rigorous standards of social and environment performance, accountability, and transparency. Being part of the Rainforest Alliance means we work with accredited farms that control water pollution and waste, and engage in sustainable farming practices. As members of the Ethical Tea Partnership, our drinkers can be certain our tea is sourced from tea estates that have good working practices, that uphold the local union agreements and law, as well as constantly work to improve workers’ education, wages and working conditions.
Plus, all of Brew Tea’s packaging is either recyclable or compostable. Even our tea bags are plastic free, created from a compostable mesh called SOILON, which is made from cornstarch. It is non-toxic, environmentally friendly and once broken down, it turns into CO2 and water — nice and simple.
Being eco-friendly is a big win for awesome tea and a win for the planet!
As we celebrate and recognize our planet this week, it’s the perfect time to look at your business and evaluate what you do. Together we can make a positive impact if we all do our part.
